Scenario
- A high-capacity Hewlett Packard Laserjet 4250DTN duplex (double-sided) network laser printer has been brought online.
- On the network, this printer has been given the name PA_ACC_F1 to designate it as a "Printer Agent-Accounting-First Floor 1".
Don't worry about the term printer agent, its simply a Novell term in which for each physical printer there exists a logical printer agent which represents it to the NetWare system. - In this example, the printer agent resides on Novell eDirectory context .som.staff.hw and the Novell tree has name HW_TREE. These settings will naturally be different in your own environment.
Adding the printer
The video below will explain how to add this printer to your list of networked printers.
In summary, the three easy steps are required to add and configure this printer are also listed here.
- Add the printer via the Printers Control Panel
- In the Printers Control Panel, if you see a a printer with the name PA_ACC_F1 it is best to delete this (right-click and select delete). This printer icon refers to the older physical printer which has been replaced.
- Now, adding the new printer (same name, new physical printer, new printer driver required). Still in the Printers Control Panel, click on the text that says Add New Printer.
- In the printer installation wizard that appears, you can browse the network for the new printer (a little tricky!) or add it by name (easier).
When the Wizard screen entitled "Specify a Printer" appears, choose the 2nd of the three listed options, entitled connect to this printer. - The printer name to type in the box is \\hw_tree\PA_ACC_F1.som.staff.hw
You must include the two backslash characters at the start. - When you click the Next button, it is quite normal to wait a few minutes until something happens - do not exit the Wizard. You may think the Wizard has a problem, but just wait, it really can take several minutes before the next stage occurs.
- That's the printer installed! Just two steps to configure it now. Once added, ensure the Printer Properties correctly specify paper size and that the duplex-unit is installed
- Right-click on the printer icon and choose Properties.
- Select the Device Settings tab.
- Scroll down and locate the line named Duplex Unit (for two-sided printing).
In the dropdown box changed this to Installed. - If you see the paper size letter anywhere, click on this and change it to A4.
- Ensure the Printing Preferences correctly specify paper size and that double-sided printing is selected.
- Right-click on the printer icon and choose Printing Preferences ....
- Under the Paper/Quality tab, if you see the paper size letter anywhere, click on this and change it to A4.
- Under the Finishing tab, ensure the checkbox named Print on Both Sides is checked.
Overriding the Double-Sided copy setting
With respect to double-sided printing, this should be the default setting for the printer, ensured by following the above steps. This saves a huge amount of paper. The printer can also print 1,2,4,8 or 16 pages per side - a superb feature for producing draft copies (under the Finishing tab - covered next.)
You can manually choose single-sided printing at any time. The printing preferences of any document you print always override the default settings for the Printer itself.
When printing a document, as the printer dialogue window appears, watch out for the Properties button - it is always present but you may not have noticed it. Click this and it will bring up the Printing Preferences window from which you may select Finishing tab and de-select the checkbox named Print on Both Sides. The video below demonstrates this.
Number of Copies
The printer is configured to print only one copy of any document. If you require more, please use the photocopier beside the printer.
